How do I remove ceramic tile from the drywall in a bay window?

They are 4" square glazed ceramic tile on the bottom sill of a bay window. Would it be easier or cheaper to just cover the tile with another material and paint it to match the walls? What material? Do I need to prep the tile first? Thanks. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
